Derek Yu gave an update for UFO 50 this week and seems like it’s finally getting released this year! Excerpt from the steam community page:
“ The short answer is that we should have a complete game in a few months but are planning for a release in the second half of the year to give us time to do more testing and then marketing, etc“
This has been on my mind since before it was announced in 2017 and was originally intended to be released in 2018 (you can still see that date on the original trailer) I remember a similar thing happened with Jonathon Blow’s “the Witness”, Originally intended for release in 2011 but eventually came out 5 years later in 2016. He had announced it around 2009, not long after Braid got released, but I don’t think he gathered a full team until 2012 and it kind of grew into the perfect game it is today. The dev blog for it was wicked. Now I think about it, even the Braid Anniversary edition was supposed to release a few years ago and has been paused until April this year. It’s all got me thinking about the great games that have been in the lab for a while
Miegakure
first anounced: 2010? release…???
Miegakure is a puzzle game that uses the 4th dimension, an extra spacial dimension and has been M.I.A for years.
I can’t even rememebr how I first heard about this game but it was a really long time ago and I was kind of obsessed with it for a while. It was anounced during the indie game heydey, just before “Indie Game: The Movie came out… I actually bought that movie on Steam!? What a mad time.News was pretty slow on this one, understandably I guess, it was a pretty mathmatecially challenging concept, a 4th spacial dimension. They even started programming phsyics for it too! The first footage started popping up out of conventions in 2010
I just fact checked and found a talk he did about it at TIGJam 13 years ago that was presented by Indie Game the movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26RKqn_lo38 I knew there was a connection, it’s been so long.
Anyway, footage would pop up here and there at various expos and I think it got some official footage as a PS4 release in 2014 but really, its been pretty quiet. Normally I’d just assume it was vapourware of that MTB has decided to focus more on the science than making a game as I think he was publishing papers about the maths, giving talks etc, all conjecture. He released a 4d toy app for phones and tablets in 2017, which I assumed was to fund the final leg of developemnt, conjecture again, but it 2024 now and still no sign. That’s almost 14 years since anouncement and I stopped thinking about it too much until this UFO 50 anouncement had me thinking about all these missing indie classics. Turns out, Mark Ten Bosch has been running a patreon this entire time with new footage of the game and everything!! I was over the moon… but some of the posts requires a $25 memebership level so I searched aorund for some free info then decided to jsut leave it. it’s been 14 years already, I can wait a little longer.
When will we get these games!?
