Plumbers don't wear ties and spinning tyres
Sun Mar 10 2024It’s March 10th/ Mar10 day for all who celebrate, so I guess a lot of this week involved gaming news outlets speculating what Nintendo would be announcing. We had the leaks about a switch successor being released at the end of this year, then a follow up leak saying it had been delayed until 2025. The biggest news was probably that Lego would be releasing sets based on Mario Kart and we got release dates for Paper Mario and Luigi’s mansion for switch. happy Mar10 day everyone! On the complete opposite end of the scale, notorious 3do game “plumbers don't wear ties” got a definitive edition and a new mud runner game got released…
Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties: Definitive Edition
A 4k remastering of one of the worst games of all time with added content, behind the scenes features and an unlockable documentary with a bunch of familiar faces reflecting on it’s legacy.
The original game was released for Panasonic’s 3DO in 1993 and the Angry Video game Nerd reviewed it angrily in 2011, that’s basically all I really know about it. AVGN’s review pretty much breaks down all you need to know though: it’s a visual novel that barely has a script or any sense of direction and it wasn’t really technically sound either. You either know about it already or should probably just watch AVGN break it down. It’s not a full priced game but it is still 17 for a lousy game, I’m just a total sucker for this sort of thing. My girlfriend and I spend a lot of time watching the most mundane videos we can find on YouTube. People who have creativity in their hearts but can’t quite pull it off. There’s a kind of meta in figuring out what it was they were going for and enjoying how it actually turned out. Plumbers Don't Wear Ties feels like an incredibly rare video game equivalent of that. I guess, the main pull here is the documentary content and the behind the scenes stuff. You’re basically paying for a making off DVD. There’s another one coming out soon about Llamasoft’s Jeff Minter but it seems like a lot more effort went into it and the games where kind of cool to begin with. Overall , I think I’m kind of into this new era of the playable documentary.
Expeditions: A MudRunner Game
A spin tyres/ mud runner game, meaning it’s a total ball ache to drive anywhere but the main aim of the game is to drive everywhere…
These mud runner games really speak to me but I just can’t give them the time they need. I once spent 2hours on a boss in Sekiro but I feel like the entirety of these games is just that feeling over and over again without the pay off. Little progress, lots of wasted time… maybe I’m wrong. Regardless, I’d really like to have the time to play them. I bought Mud runner and Snow Runner but I can never quite settle into a play session with them. The closest I’ve come to really getting stuck into a game like this is probably Death Stranding, the secret spin tyres game that uses legs instead. Death Stranding had such a compelling story and all this mad sci fi stuff, but I still definitely felt like I could be doing something a bit more productive than slowly walking up a snowy mountain, praying i don't fall over. Are these games suppose to be meditative? Maybe I need to settle myself and zone into the atmosphere, or is it all about the simulation aspect? Most of my gaming takes place on the couch, handheld, while my girlfriend watched tv so I can remain at least a little social while I play, this type of game requires me to be way too present. I’m not picking it up… will just watch some YouTube videos about it while I do something productive.
Conclusion
A MID week for gaming news and a few forbidden releases. Ill probably pick up plumbers don't wear ties when it’s on sale, watched a handful of YouTube mini-docs on it already so I’m in no mad rush to part with 17 quid for more info… although I am intrigued by the weird little dungeon crawler thing they've made for it. Expeditions is definitely something Ill enjoy watching somebody else play in the background while I do something else. I think I could only really justify playing these types of games if my friends were playing too or we could play together, combine social time with game time. Maybe I need to get some sort of game club going?
